.SHORT TERM...
(Tonight through Tuesday night)
Issued at 1131 PM MST Sun Feb 1 2026
Low clouds, and mist are redeveloping once again in the lower Pecos
River Valley of Chaves County, including Roswell, early this
morning. Any low clouds and mist should burn off mid to late this
morning as stronger southwest flow mixes down to the surface. The
recent warmup peaks areawide on today as the upper high/ridge
flattens and shifts east to over the Great Plains due to a weak
trough moving across the area. Highs will generally 8 to 15 degrees
above average with the aforementioned disturbance bringing some high
clouds overhead. Breezy west winds with peak gusts of 30 to 40 mph
across east central NM on the southern flank of a surface lee low
over northeast NM. Breezy north winds across far northeast NM on the
northern flank of the surface lee low. The weak upper level trough
and surface lee low exits east into Texas tonight allowing a weak
backdoor front with some breezy north winds in it`s wake to push
through eastern NM. This backdoor front will cool high temperatures
down close to average on Tuesday. Similar high temperatures to today
across western and central NM as a Rex Block develops along the
Pacific Coast. A disturbance embedded in the northwest flow between
the Rex Block and longwave troughing across the eastern 2/3rd of the
Continental U.S. will slide down the Rockies and High Plains late
Tuesday into early Wednesday morning. Can`t rule out a few sprinkles
and flurries across northeast and far east central NM during this
time.
&&
.LONG TERM...
(Wednesday through next Monday)
Issued at 1131 PM MST Sun Feb 1 2026
High temperatures cool down to near average across western and
central NM and slightly below average across eastern NM with
breezy northeast and east winds on Wednesday behind a backdoor
front associated with the Tuesday night/Wednesday morning
disturbance. The cooldown won`t last long though as high
temperatures quickly rebound to around 5 to 15 degrees above
average with continued dry conditions late next week. This is due
to the upper high portion of the Rex block over the Pacific coast
pivoting east to over much of the Intermountain West with the
upper low of the Rex block meandering over Southern CA and Baja
CA. Extended ensemble guidance shows a pattern change beginning
next Monday February 9th as a longwave upper level trough moves
into the Pacific Coast. This pattern change will help to increase
precipitation chances across much of the western U.S., including
New Mexico.

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1015 AM MST Mon Feb 2 2026
LIFR conditions associated with fog at and near KROW is lifting
this hour, and VFR will prevail areawide through the TAF period.
Breezy westerly winds have already picked up through the central
highlands and east-central plains from Clines Corners to KSXU to
KTCC to KCVN. Breezy northwesterlies will pickup elsewhere over
northern and central NM with gusts ranging from 15 to 25 kts this
afternoon before tapering off again tonight. Freezing fog is not
expected to return to KROW tonight into Tuesday morning.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 1131 PM MST Sun Feb 1 2026
No critical fire weather concerns through this weekend. The recent
warmup peaks areawide today with some breezy west winds across east
central areas and breezy north winds across far northeast areas.
These winds combined with min relative humidity values in the low
teens and 50th-70th percentile ERCs will result in elevated fire
weather conditions across northeast areas Cooling down closer to
average across eastern areas Tuesday and near to slightly below
average across all areas Wednesday behind two backdoor fronts. Some
flurries and sprinkles across northeast NM Tuesday night into early
Wednesday. Milder temperatures quickly return late next week as high
pressure builds east and dominates the intermountain West. More
widespread areas of good to very good ventilation across the
highlands, east central and northeast plains today. Fair to very
good ventilation outside of the Rio Grande Valley and southeast
plains Tuesday. Good to very good ventilation across south central
and eastern areas Wednesday before widespread poor ventilation
Thursday and Friday. Good to very good ventilation across the
highlands Saturday.
