Weather Map Features & Usage Instructions
Overview:
These interactive weather maps are built on Leaflet.js and offer a wide range of live weather layers including radar, alerts, observations, fire, smoke, forecasts, and more. Each map opens centered on its region with default layers already active. All layers are toggled on and off from the sidebar on the left. Home Button: The Home button is located in the upper left area of the map, next to the basemap selector. Clicking it instantly returns the map to its default center coordinates and zoom level for that region. Basemap Selector: The dropdown in the upper left lets you switch between available basemaps including ArcGIS Dark Gray (default), ArcGIS Street Map, OpenStreetMap, and others. Choose whichever suits your viewing preference. Map Layers (Left Sidebar): Each layer has a checkbox to turn it on or off. Simply check or uncheck any layer to show or hide it instantly. Layers are organized from top to bottom in display priority. Animated Radar: Check "U.S. Animated Radar" to view a looping sequence of recent NEXRAD radar frames. The animation plays automatically once the layer is enabled. The more zoomed in you are, the faster it renders. Weather Alerts: "U.S. Weather Alerts" shows current NOAA polygon alerts shaded by alert type across the entire country. "U.S. Severe Watches" and "U.S. Severe Warnings" display storm-based short-duration watches and warnings respectively. The Alert Legend button near the top of the map lists all alert types and their colors, with a link to the full warnings page. METAR Observations: "METAR Obs Stations" displays current surface observations from airports and weather stations across the U.S. and Canada. Each marker shows the current temperature in °F (and °C for Canadian stations), sky condition, and wind direction. Wildfire & Smoke Layers: Several fire and smoke layers are available including Wildfire Hotspots, VIIRS and MODIS hotspot data at 24-hour and 7-day intervals, Surface Smoke Forecast, Vertical Smoke Forecast, and Surface Dust Forecast. Regional Maps: The dropdown menu at the top of the sidebar lets you jump directly to any regional map including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Canada, and all U.S. regional zones. Dynamic Legends: Legends are displayed dynamically below the map. When you turn on a layer that has a legend, it appears automatically in the legend panel below. When you turn the layer off, its legend disappears. Only the legends for your currently active layers are shown. Zoom & Pan: Use your mouse scroll wheel to zoom in and out, or use the +/− controls in the upper left of the map. Click and drag to pan to any area. Double-clicking zooms in on a specific point. |
