Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
748 PM PDT Thu Mar 19 2026
.SYNOPSIS...19/707 PM.
Temperatures will remain well above normal through next week,
though some cooling is expected Friday through this weekend.
Areas of dense coastal fog will be possible through the weekend
as well. Temperatures will trend upward again next week but are
not expected to be as hot as this week.
&&
.SHORT TERM (THU-SUN)...19/747 PM.
***UPDATE***
Under the continuing heat wave, high temperatures today were a mix
of 2 to 6 degrees warmer in some of the valley and coastal areas,
but also 5 to 10 degrees cooler in others. The most notable
cooling trends were along the Santa Barbara portion of the
Central Coast and in the interior of Santa Barbara and San Luis
Obispo Counties. The Oxnard Plain and eastern SBA South Coast also
cooled a few degrees. However, many high temperature records were
set, including an all time high record in Woodland Hills with 102
degrees.
Friday will see continued heat, but mainly in the valleys and
interior areas. Coastal areas will see 2 to 5 degrees of cooling.
The day is likely to start out cooler with a potential return of
the marine layer tonight, and some patchy low clouds and dense
fog near the beaches late tonight into Friday morning. The most
likely area to get the low clouds will be along the L.A. coastal
areas. There are decreasing chances of low clouds affecting
coastal areas from Oxnard northward to Santa Barbara and the
Santa Maria Valley.
Light east to northeast flow is expected tonight into Friday
morning, with a shift to mainly weak to locally gusty onshore
winds in the afternoon. Friday night into Saturday should see
more extensive coverage along the coast, aided by the shift to
onshore flow.
***From Previous Discussion***
In general temperatures today are either the same or a few degrees
cooler than yesterday. Expecting one more day of similar
temperatures before the current high pressure system starts
shifting into AZ which will initiate a brief cooling trend
over the weekend. Most areas except the far interior will
experience 5-10 degrees of cooling this weekend, though that still
keeps highs 10-20 degrees above normal. A shallow marine layer has
begun to form over the coastal waters and many beaches will start
out with dense fog the next few days and that will help cool off
the coastal areas.
In the meantime, it continues to be very hot with temperatures
20-30 degrees above normal Heat Advisories and Extreme Heat
Warnings remain in effect through Friday. Based on the current
forecast, there is only about a 30% chance of extending heat
advisories into Saturday, and those would most likely be in the
inland areas.
.LONG TERM (MON-THU)...19/215 PM.
Temperatures will slowly start to increase across inland areas
Sunday and for coastal areas on Monday. Not expecting
temperatures to be as hot as this week, but still 15-20 degrees
above normal, with a less than 5% chance of reaching 100 in the
valleys.
Additional rain possibilities still look very bleak through the
end of the month. Some models indicate some very light rain in
early April but amounts are mostly under a tenth of an inch.
&&
.AVIATION...19/2305Z.
At 2212Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 400 ft deep. The top of the
inversion was at 1700 ft with a temperature of 30 C.
High confidence for desert and valley TAF sites. Low confidence
for coastal sites south of Point Conception: KSBA, KOXR, KCMA,
KSMO, KLAX, & KLGB.
Chance V/LIFR CIGs arrive: KSBA (30%) , KOXR (50%), KCMA (30%),
KSMO (40%), KLAX (50-60%), and KLGB (60%).
Timing of CIG/VSBY restrictions may be off +/- 3 hours, and flight
minimums off by one category.
KLAX...Low confidence in TAF. There is a 50-60% chance LIFR CIGs
arrive. Timing of arrival and clearing could be off by 2 hours if
forecast materializes.
KBUR...High confidence in VFR TAF.
&&
.MARINE...19/707 PM.
Conditions are likely to remain below Small Craft Advisory (SCA)
levels through Friday night or Saturday morning. SCA conditions
are likely to develop Saturday afternoon through Sunday across the
outer waters and the nearshore waters along the Central Coast.
Seas will reach 8-12 feet, and there is a low (20-30 percent)
chance of GALE FORCE winds, highest from around Point Arguello
south to the Channel Islands Saturday night and Sunday. Winds are
expected to gradually subside Sunday night through Monday.
Areas of dense fog are likely to be widespread tonight into
Friday morning.
