Area Forecast Discussion

.KEY MESSAGES...
* Dry conditions and breezy southwesterly winds will bring elevated
fire danger to southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona into
this evening.
* Temperatures will bottom-out near-normal on Saturday before
increasing through the work week to around 10 degrees above-
normal.
* Monsoonal moisture may make a return the middle to end of next
week.

.DISCUSSION...Today through Friday.
A weak trough will push through the region today with little impacts
other than gusty south to southwest winds and some slight cooling
today through Sunday. Wind gusts will generally range from about 25
to 35 mph with occasional gusts to 40 mph in southwest-northeast
oriented valleys and across portions of the western Mojave Desert.
This, combined with dry conditions and dry vegetation has resulted
in increased fire danger across southern Nevada and northwestern
Arizona today. Recreation with sparks or flames including safe-and-
sane fireworks is highly discouraged. See the FIRE WEATHER
discussion below for more details. As this trough pushes east on
Saturday, we will see decreasing surface pressure gradients leading
to lower wind speeds, although wind gusts between 20 and 30 mph will
once again occur leading to elevated fire weather conditions.
As we go into next week, high pressure will build over northern
Mexico and gradually expand northward during the first half of the
week. This will lead to temperatures climbing to well above normal
with readings generally 10 to 15 degrees above normal by mid-week.
We will start to see widespread Moderate Heat Risk (Level 2 out of
4) and pockets of Major Heat Risk (Level 3 out of 4) in the lower
desert valleys such as Death Valley, the Las Vegas Valley, the Moapa
Valley, and the Colorado River Valley. This level of heat will
impact anyone who is outdoors without proper hydration and frequent
breaks in the shade and/or air conditioning. Otherwise, expect
breezy southwest winds each afternoon and mostly sunny skies.
Something else to watch will be the return of monsoonal moisture the
middle to end of next week as the high over northern Mexico start to
push northward. PWs are forecast to increase to around 0.75" - 1.00"
on Tuesday, generally south of I-15, but by Wednesday and Thursday
the 0.75" line is forecast to expand as far north as southern
Lincoln and central Nye counties. Overall, instability is rather
limited Tuesday and Wednesday, but will increase Thursday leading to
a better chance of seeing isolated showers and thunderstorms.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast
Package...Breezy southwesterly winds will decrease over the next
few hours, eventually becoming light southerly winds. Breezy
southerly winds will pick back up again late Saturday morning,
accompanied by 15 to 20 knot gusts. The exact direction of these
southerly winds may vary between southeasterly and south-
southwesterly before finally settling in from the southwest around
mid-afternoon. Wind gusts will drop off after sunset, with winds
maintaining a southwesterly direction through the evening hours,
becoming more southerly overnight. VFR conditions will persist
through the TAF period. However, smoke from wildfires in
California will drift over the area, impacting slantwise
visibility at times Saturday morning and afternoon. Temperatures
will exceed 100 degrees from 21 to 01 UTC on Saturday.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Breezy southerly
winds across southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona will
decrease in magnitude over the next few hours with light winds
favoring a southerly direction continuing overnight. Breezy
southerly to southwesterly winds will pick back up late Saturday
morning and will continue into Saturday evening. Winds in the
Owens Valley will favor diurnal directional trends with sustained
speeds around 5 to 10 knots. Gusty winds will persist across the
western Mojave Desert through the TAF period with 25 to 35 knot
wind gusts dropping off overnight and returning Saturday
afternoon. Smoke from wildfires southeastern Nevada will pick back
up in the afternoon, advecting into the southern Great Basin and
Utah during the late afternoon and evening hours.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...Gusty southwest winds, relative humidities less than
15 percent, and extremely dry fuels will lead to critical fire
weather conditions across much of southern Nevada and northwest
Arizona into this evening. Currently, there are Red Flag Warnings
posted for southern Nevada through 8pm this evening and until 11pm
for northwest Arizona before conditions start to improve with
diminishing winds and rising humidity. On Saturday, winds are
expected to decrease with afternoon gusts between 20 to 30 mph along
with relative humidities dropping below 15 percent. We will once
again see near critical fire weather conditions, but at this time
Red Flag conditions are not expected.
&&
.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
procedures.
