Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Albuquerque NM

...New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, FIRE WEATHER...

next 7 days, with modest temperature fluctuations across eastern
NM late this week.
- A dusting and snow flurries may develop across northeast NM
Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Otherwise, dry

.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Tuesday night)
Issued at 1156 AM MST Mon Feb 2 2026
Overall pleasant weather conditions with only minor sensible weather
impacts continue across northern and central NM to start the work
week. A modest shortwave trough crossing UT/CO will clip
northeastern NM tonight. This is bringing breezy northwesterly to
westerly winds across the area this afternoon with modest gusts of
15 to 25 mph, locally higher to the central highlands. These winds
will shift out of the north tonight across eastern NM. In the
meantime, the freezing fog that developed along the Pecos River near
Roswell to Artesia is nearly burned off this hour, and not expected
to return tonight. Given the persistent snow on the ground and prior
days still being cooler, did come down on today`s forecast high
temperatures into the 40s to low 50s near and south of Roswell.
Yet another shortwave trough looks to push southward along the
Rockies along the western edge of a large Rex-Block pattern along
the Pacific Coast. This will bring another round of breezy to
locally windy conditions along the highlands due to the lee-side
surface low setting up east and southeast of the Sangre de Cristo`s.
Winds quickly turn northerly Tuesday night behind the associated
cold front pushing southward across eastern NM. This will be a
modest cold front bringing a modest east canyon wind thru the gaps
of the central mountain chain early Wednesday morning into Santa Fe,
Albuquerque, and locally stronger at Carrizozo. Cooler temperatures
fill into eastern NM as well.
&&
.LONG TERM...
(Wednesday through Sunday)
Issued at 1156 AM MST Mon Feb 2 2026
Wednesday sees the cold front washout with high temperatures falling
back into the 50s for much of eastern NM. This might end up being
fairly consistent for Roswell given the suppressed high temperatures
there from the still melting snow in the area. Calm conditions and a
general warming trend take hold thereafter thru the rest of the week
as the ridge associated with the Rex-Block pattern to the west of
the region slides over NM and flattens.
The extended period features better chances for precipitation
returning to the Land of Enchantment as global numerical models are
advertising a Pacific low cross the region late next weekend into
next week.
&&
.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1015 AM MST Mon Feb 2 2026
LIFR conditions associated with fog at and near KROW is lifting
this hour, and VFR will prevail areawide through the TAF period.
Breezy westerly winds have already picked up through the central
highlands and east-central plains from Clines Corners to KSXU to
KTCC to KCVN. Breezy northwesterlies will pickup elsewhere over
northern and central NM with gusts ranging from 15 to 25 kts this
afternoon before tapering off again tonight. Freezing fog is not
expected to return to KROW tonight into Tuesday morning.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 1156 AM MST Mon Feb 2 2026
Elevated fire weather conditions this afternoon and Tuesday
afternoon favoring the highlands adjacent to the central mountain
chain where breezy to locally windy westerly winds will be present
each afternoon. A cold front brings a northerly to easterly wind
shift to eastern and central NM Tuesday night into Wednesday morning
before winds wash out and taper off late Wednesday. Light winds,
afternoon breezes, and a general warming trend are the rule Thursday
into the weekend.
