    chances are expected by the weekend as a disturbance in the
    Gulf moves northward.

.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Wednesday)

Areas of fog can be expected across north Georgia this morning given
lingering low-level moisture beneath mostly clear skies, but this
will quickly diminish after sunrise. Surface high pressure settles
southeastward into the Mid-Atlantic today, resulting in drier and
more pleasant conditions. Mostly sunny skies will prevail for most,
though lingering high clouds will affect far southern counties. High
pressure will remain the defining feature through Wednesday as it
slips off the Mid-Atlantic coastline, keeping things dry and
seasonal.

Temperatures will run near normal with highs ranging from the upper
70s to low 80s for most areas today and tomorrow while Wednesday
morning lows will settle into the 50s (and 40s in the mountains).

Thursday and Friday:

The end of the work week will bring mainly dry conditions and near-
seasonal/slightly-above-seasonal temperatures, thanks to a mid-
/upper-level pattern that favors subsidence and high pressure across
the Southeast.

Saturday through Monday:

Our eyes will be on the Gulf over the coming days regarding the
development and evolution of an area of low pressure currently in
the southwestern Gulf. At this time, the National Hurricane Center
(NHC) has an 80% chance of tropical formation in the next 7 days.
Features that will impact the track of this system include: high
pressure along the Eastern Seaboard (which could induce cold air
damming or the "wedge" across the forecast area) and a longwave
trough across the western CONUS. Steering flow between these two
features should bring whatever comes of the system northward into
the northern Gulf and somewhere along the Gulf Coast region. As far
as potential impacts to north and central Georgia -- it is much too
early to say. Models struggle to handle systems before a defined
circulation develops, which is the stage we are at now.

A couple variables that are currently in our forecast over the
weekend into early next week -- breezy conditions and the return of
showers and storms for at least portions of the forecast area. How
breezy it is will largely be determined by the interplay of the
wedge and the proximity of the potentially-tropical system. At this
time, sustained winds up to 15 mph and gusts up to 25-30 mph are on
the table. As far as rainfall goes, should tropical moisture
advection set up over the forecast area, periods of heavy rain and
resulting flash flooding and/or rises on rivers, creeks, and streams
would be possibilities.

The weekend and Monday should bring cooler daytime high temperatures
-- in the 70s to lower 80s.

VFR at all sites through the period. There may be a few passing
high clouds at MCN/CSG but expect mostly SKC with no wx impacts
over the next 24 hours. E winds 8-13kts with periodic gusts up to
22kts possible thru 00z after which winds subside to less than
7kts.
