&&
.KEY MESSAGES...
1. Dense Fog with a Very High Transportation Risk with
visibility down to zero each morning through next week in the
San Joaquin Valley.
2. Dry conditions and near to above average temperatures
continue for the next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
While a slight weaking in the ridge aloft takes place tonight
into tomorrow morning, fog is still expected to reform across
the San Joaquin Valley. This fog is likely to pose a very high
travel risk for Monday morning commuters as visibilities may
reduce down to below 200 feet in some places, especially in the
more rural areas of the Valley. Temperatures are also expected
to come down a few degrees tomorrow due to the slightly lowered
500mb heights, caused by said weakening of the ridge. Later this
week, a Rex Block pattern is expected to set up from Wednesday
into the weekend for the southwest, with the weak area of low
pressure off the coast of Baja California. This will lead to
continued stable air aloft and further potential for fog
formation.
Looking to the Climate Prediction Center`s outlooks, a fairly
significant shift has been issued for California where both the
6 to 10 and 8 to 14 day outlooks changed to above normal
precipitation possible for those time periods. This has shifted
from the previous outlooks that were mainly forecasting below
normal precipitation. While these forecasts are mainly beyond
the period of high confidence, this is an indication that a
pattern change later this month is possible, though that will
depend on the consistency for these outlooks for any increase in
confidence.
&&
.AVIATION...
There is at least a 40-50% chance for returning to IFR after
08Z Monday. By 11Z to 12Z Monday, there is a 50-70% chance of
reaching VLIFR conditions in dense fog. These conditions will
persist past 19Z Monday. Otherwise, VFR conditions are expected
for the Sierra Nevada, Coastal Range, and Mojave Desert for the
next 24 hours.
&&
