Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
106 PM PST Sun Feb 1 2026

.KEY MESSAGES...

* High pressure building overhead will bring dry conditions with
light winds and valley inversions prevailing this week.

* Above average afternoon highs will persist through the upcoming
  week.

* The high pressure may weaken by next weekend with precipitation
chances returning by the second week of February, but
  confidence is low.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Sierra ridge winds have decreased after peaking between 40-50 mph
earlier today, as a weak departing shortwave brushes across the
Pacific Northwest.

High pressure will then build in overhead with a blocking pattern
keeping it in place through at least midweek. This will result in
light winds with a return of valley inversions, and patchy
freezing fog for fog-prone Sierra valleys including Truckee/Martis
Valley and around Mono Lake. This fog isn`t expected to be as
persistent compared to last month, as increasing daylight hours,
mostly sunny skies and less snow cover should allow better fog
dispersion during the day. Mild daytime highs will continue,
mainly in the 50s to lower 60s for much of this week.

This blocking pattern is projected to weaken later this week and
next weekend, although incoming weather systems from the Pacific
during this time frame look to be on the weak side and tracking
too far north to bring precip to CA/NV. By the 2nd week of
February, mainly on or after the 9th, the storm track shows a
potentially better signal of pushing closer to the Sierra and
bringing precip chances back to the region. However, confidence in
this wetter outcome remains on the low side this many days out, as
prior attempts in mid-late January to break down the persistent
dry pattern were not successful. MJD

&&

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions and light winds prevail through the upcoming week
for most of the main terminals, with the more widespread cirrus
coverage diminishing from north to south. This clearing increases
the potential of patchy FZFG forming at KTRK between 09Z-15Z for
the next few mornings. MJD
